The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
